Welcome to Stenströms Herr & Damekipering – the original store where the story of Stenströms began in 1883 . In the heart of Helsingborg, we have dressed generations with a passion for quality, craftsmanship and personal service for over 140 years .

1883 – It all starts on Kullagatan

The story begins in the spring of 1883 when August Stenström opens his first men's clothing store at Kullagatan 7 in Helsingborg. He is said to have said:

“The workforce is in Malmö, the knowledge in Lund – but the capital, we find that in Helsingborg.”

The business grew rapidly. As early as 1890 , another store opened in Högvaktens hus. In 1892, the business moved to Stortorget , where we are still located – in exactly the same location more than 130 years later.

From store to world-renowned brand

In the late 1890s, Stenströms skjortfabrik was founded, which soon became internationally known for its quality and fit. The official start is dated 1899 , and AB Stenströms Skjortfabrik was registered in 1902. During the 20th century, the store and factory developed along two parallel tracks – retail and manufacturing – with common roots and continued close ties.

Stortorget – our home since 1892

The building that houses the shop was originally part of what later became the Grand Hotel. Many believe that the shop moved into the hotel – but the truth is the opposite: Stenströms was here first . The shop was already in its current location in 1906 , with its characteristic facade facing the square.

A living family history

When Börje Bengtsson bought the store in 1982, a new era began. Daughter Annelie Bengtsson (now Anderberg) , raised in the textile industry, and husband Björn Anderberg continued the family's commitment. They have run the store side by side for over 30 years – as the fifth family to carry on the legacy.

Sweden's oldest clothing store

For 140 years, the store has stood strong through wars, recessions, pandemics and the rise of e-commerce – without losing its soul. A classic style, genuine expertise and personal service have made us Sweden's oldest clothing store , still operating in the same place where it all began.

Over the years, both loyal Helsinki residents and international guests have shopped at Stortorget. Artists such as Leonard Cohen , Paul Anka , Lill Lindfors and Joakim Thåström have visited the store – but it is our returning customers, families across generations, who mean the most.

Today – tradition meets the present

Today, Stenströms Herr & Damekipering is a modern multi-brand store for both men and women. Here, classic Stenströms shirts coexist with handpicked brands such as:

• 1883 – The first store opens at Kullagatan 7.
• 1890 – Additional shop in the High Guard's House.
• 1892 – Moved to Stortorget (current address).
• 1899–1902 – The shirt factory is established and registered as a limited liability company.
• 1982 – Börje Bengtsson takes over the store.
• 1989–1990s – Annelie & Björn Anderberg take an active part; the store continues to be run in the family.
• 2023 – 140th anniversary as Sweden's oldest clothing store.
